SIPERNAT D 13 is a milled, hydrophobic (i. e. not wettable by water) silica, high methanol wettability and low surface.

SIPERNAT D 13 is used in a great variety of defoamer due to its high effectiveness and ease of dispersion.

SIPERNAT represents a specific product range of precipitated silica, aluminum and calcium silicates.
SIPERNAT D 13 is a very finely ground, hydrophobic silica.
SIPERNAT D 13 is used as an anti-caking agent for moisture-sensitive powders, as a reinforcing filler in silicone rubber and in a great variety of defoamers due to its high effectiveness in foam destruction as well as its easy dispersion behavior in non water-based solvents.

Uses of SIPERNAT D 13:
Anticaking agent
Defoamant
Flow-promoting agent

SIPERNAT D 13 has not been classified as hazardous according to the legislation in force.

SIPERNAT grades are produced from sulfuric acid and water glass solutions (sodium silicate solutions) under particular conditions (temperature, pH value, concentra-tion ratios, agitation).
The following equation describes the overall reaction: Na2O . 3.3 SiO2 + H2SO4→3.3 SiO2 + Na2SO4 + H20.
Silica of different property profiles are obtained once the product has been washed, filtered, and dried.
For some products, a grinding step follows the drying

Several methods are available to determine the hydrophobicity of silica.
First of all, it is possible to quantify a silica hydrophobicity by determining its wettability in various methanol-water mixtures.
This is based on the fact that hydrophobic silica can not be wetted by water but by methanol.
The amount of methanol that is necessary to wet the hydrophobic silica is consequently a measure of its hydrophobicity.
Another method is water-vapor adsorption under defined conditions.
This is based on the fact that highly hydrophobized silica shows a low water absorption and that low water adsorption thus correlates with a high hydrophobicity
