Profile
Cleansing action and degreasing effect
SLES has a very good grease and soil dispersing capacity. Excellent cleansing action is achieved by combining this product with a strong wetting agent such as an alkylaryl sulphonate or a secondary alkane sulphonate.
Compatibility with other surfactants
SLES is miscible with anionic and nonionic surfactants. Shampoos with very good skin tolerability can be produced by combining SLES with mild Co-Surfactants.
The feel, lustre and manageability of the hair are markedly improved.
It is also possible to incorporate raw materials with pearl and silk lustre effects.
Foaming power
SLES is one of the most effective foaming agents. Especially in highly diluted aqueous solutions its foaming properties are unsurpassed.
The foaming properties in hard water are particularly noteworthy because the hardness constituents of water are known to lower the foam volume and especially the foam stability of most known foaming agents.
Lime soap dispersing capacity
Because of its excellent lime soap dispersing capacity SLES is preferred for the manufacture of bub ble bath preparations.
If the use in hard water is unavoidable in the manufacture of bubble bath preparations, a light film of dispersed lime soaps may form in the end product.
Viscosity behaviour
One of the most remarkable characteristics of this type of surfactants is its rheological behaviour.
Aqueous solutions of salt-free ether sulphates have only very low viscosity which strongly increases if a small amount of electrolyte is added.
Alkylether sulphate solutions of 28 % strength and an initial viscosity of about 100 mPa s can be thickened to viscosity values of more than 200000 mPa s by an addition of about 5 % sodium chloride.
With an addition of electrolytes aqueous solutions containing 10 % synthetic active agent attain viscosities of more than 20000 mPa s.
This allows solutions with low synthetic active agent concentrations but having high viscosities to be produced.
The increase in viscosity with increasing electrolyte concentration up to viscosity maximum is characteristic of the behaviour of ether sulphates.
Further addition of electrolyte than results in a decrease in viscosity.
Storage
Because of its low viscosity SLES liquid is readily pumpable and can therefore be stored in tanks.
If the product is stored outside during the winter months it is possible that after repeated freezing an thawing-out a gelantinous phase will separate at the bottom of the barrel.
After slightly heating and homogenisation the irreproachable quality is restored.
Application in Detergent Industry:
Hand dishwashing liquids, detergents for hand washing liquids, wool and fine-fabric washing detergents, wash pastes, hard surface cleaners and industrial cleaning agents.

Sodium lauryl polyoxyethylene ether sulfate is an anionic surfactant, with excellent decontamination, emulsification, dispersion, wetting, solubilizing performance and foaming property.
Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), an accepted contraction of sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), is an anionic detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products (soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, etc.). SLES is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent.[1] SLES, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS), and sodium pareth sulfate are surfactants that are used in many cosmetic products for their cleaning and emulsifying properties. It is derived from palm kernel oil or coconut oil.
Its chemical formula is CH3(CH2)11(OCH2CH2)nOSO3Na. Sometimes the number represented by n is specified in the name, for example laureth-2 sulfate. The product is heterogeneous in the number of ethoxyl groups, where n is the mean. Laureth-3 sulfate is common in commercial products.
Sodium lauryl ether sulfate is gaining immense usability, owing to its good solvency, wide compatibility, thickening effect, high biodegradable, and anti-hard water ability. Moreover, its exceptional emulsification, decontamination, dispersion, solubilizing performance, and foaming attributes are bolstering its applicability in hand washing, shampoos, bubble bath liquids, and more.
The unique properties of sodium lauryl ether sulfate and its ease of formulation and production, coupled with its compatibility with all other types of surfactants has made SLES one of the most preferred primary surfactant for liquid detergents. Excellent cleaning properties and ease of application are driving the popularity of liquid detergents across the global market, further banking on the rising number of laundry services, particularly in developed countries, thus resulting in fruitful opportunities for the sodium lauryl ether sulfate market.

Personal care products application segment accounted for more than a quarter of the global SLES market and it includes consumer products such as creams, lotions, soaps, shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, toothpastes, etc.
Superior foaming and lathering properties of the product, due to which it wets the body surface, emulsifies the oil, and solubilizes soil, will have a positive influence on the global SLES market in the coming years.
Production
SLES is prepared by ethoxylation of dodecyl alcohol, which is produced industrially from palm kernel oil or coconut oil.
The resulting ethoxylate is converted to a half ester of sulfuric acid, which is neutralized by conversion to the sodium salt.
The related surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate (also known as sodium dodecyl sulfate or SDS) is produced similarly, but without the ethoxylation step.
SLS and ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS) are commonly used alternatives to SLES in consumer products.
Safety
Tests in the US indicate that it is safe for consumer use.
The Australian government’s Department of Health and Ageing and its National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) have determined SLES does not react with DNA.
Irritation
Like many other detergents, SLES is an irritant. It has also been shown that SLES causes eye or skin irritation in experiments conducted on animals and humans.
The related surfactant SLS is a known irritant

Functions: Dispersant, Emulsifier, Adjuvant, Foam Booster
Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate (SLES) is a surfactant widely used for the manufacture of cleaning products, soaps, shampoos and even toothpaste.
Thanks to its capacity as a wetting agent and emulsifier, it is also used in the cosmetic and dermopharmaceutical industry.
Traditionally, SLES is supplied at 70% or 27%.
Sodium laureth sulfate (sometimes referred to as SLES) is used in cosmetics as a detergent and also to make products bubble and foam. It is common in shampoos, shower gels and facial cleansers. It is also found in household cleaning products, like dish soap.
STRUCTURE OF SODIUM LAURETHER SULFATESODIUM LAURETH SULFAT
Lauryl is an early term for what is now called the dodecyl alkyl group, or n-C12H25.
Ether refers to one or more ethylene oxide groups placed between the sulfate and lauryl moieties.
So SLES is an oligomer that contains a few ethylene oxide linkages; the mean quantity is about 3.
SLES is the most common of a group of commercial sodium and ammonium alkyl and alkyl ether sulfates. It is an inexpensive surfactant that foams easily and is an excellent detergent. It’s essentially a synthetic soap.
The commercial product is an aqueous solution that contains 30–70 wt% of SLES. Its properties are similar to those of its non-ether cousin, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Both are used extensively in household and industrial cleaners, as well as in personal care products.
What are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), also known as Sodium dodecyl sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are both surfactants.
Why are they used in cosmetics and personal care products?
Both SLS and SLES are very effective ingredients used in cleansing products and as creams and lotions. In this function, surfactants wet body surfaces, emulsify or solubilize oils, and suspend soil. These ingredients contribute foaming and lathering properties to cleansing products and bubble baths.
Are SLS and SLES safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products?
Both SLS and SLES are safe for use in cosmetic products.
Both ingredients were reviewed in 1983 and re-reviewed in 2002 by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel and found to be safe for use in cosmetic and personal care products.
SLS and SLES can cause skin irritation in some persons, which is one reason why it is important to follow the label instructions when using a cosmetic product.
Complete reports on both ingredients are available from CIR. Substances known to be carcinogenic have been classified and registered by several international organizations, such as the World Health Organization or the International Agency for the Research of Cancer as well as the US Environment Protection Agency and the European Union. None of these organizations have classified SLES and SLS as carcinogens. There is no direct or circumstantial evidence that these two ingredients have any carcinogenic potential. The studies that have been conducted on SLS and SLES indicate that both are safe under proper conditions of use.
It’s often confused with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), but they are absolutely not the same.
The SLES molecule has a bigger water-soluble head part that makes it milder and much less irritating.
It is considered absolutely ok in the amount used in cosmetic products, though if you are looking for a mild facial cleanser, you have better chances with a formula without SLES.
For an average shower gel? SLES works just fine.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate are used in cosmetic products as cleansing agents, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and solubilizers.
SLES and SLS are anionic surfactants with excellent foaming, detergency, wetting, and emulsifying properties. They are biodegradable ingredients widely used in personal care and household cleaning products, textiles and other industrial applications.
TEXAPON® N 70 is an Anionic Surfactant which is commonly used in personal care products. Being a surfactant, you will find TEXAPON® N 70 by BASF in products such as shampoos, skin cleansers as well as other shower and bath applications.
SLES is an anionic surfactant. It is water soluble. It has excellent foaming power and detergency property. It is also a very good emulsifier. It can be used with other anionic, non-ionic, or amphoteric surfactants. However, due to its anionic character, it should not be used with vationic components like cationic surfactants, cationic dyes, etc.
